Catch Up from CARES
SA.
Thought we had better come through with a promise to
Jackie and actually submit something to the wonderful
magazine that truely inspires us all. We have had a busy
few months, but at last we have our commitee set up; regular
set meetings and have embarked on the first National
Ceasarean Awareness Day! Not bad for a few months work for
three or four dedicated busy mums! Our commitee members
are Carolyn Donaghey-Harris as secreatry, Emma Murphy as
treasurer and Jo Bainbridge (me) as co-ordinator.
CARES SA has a number of regulars coming to support
meetings throughout Adelaide. All women have stories to
share, ranging from shocking to inspirational. We have one
mum who was successful with her vbac after three sections
and with a private OB!!! A few of our members are first
time mums who find talking to others very helpful in getting
their heads around how their babies were born, (our name
kind of says it all when it comes to listening to the
stories).
Things were pretty quiet on the vbac front but now we
have two pregnant members...me being one of them! As if I
dont have enough on my plate! This time I am aiming for a
anterior positioned girl &endash; no more posterior boys for
me thanks! (My husband is getting sick of my feminist
comments about men being back to front.) I have found that
fighting the fight on behalf of others is very different
than when you are doing it for yourself. I was shocked that
silly attitudes are still ripe in society regarding vbac
saftey. A few places have given me and thus CARES just
cause to take on their vbac policies. The whole experience
has been an eye opener. What you are told in theory is not
alwasy what is true in reality. As a society we have a long
way to go....
What we need is awareness! September 11 is the day.
I am sure Jackie will have plenty of info in this mag
about the awareness day so I wont go in to too much.
Basically the idea came up as almost a joke and then we
thought 'what the hell?' I sent word out via a few email
lists and was shocked at the responce. So many people think
it is not only a good idea but an essential one. We have
even received support and encouragement from Sheila
Kitzinger and Nancy Weiner Cohnen. What a buzz that was!
The day is open to do what ever you wish as long as it is
promoting the realities of cs with a focus on the emotional
issues, and/or promoting vbac. Just give Jackie or myself a
yell and let us know what you want to do so we can help
promote it for you (we have had many offers for promotion
through many newsletters and maternity magazines) and then
GO FORTH AND MAKE AWARE!
To close, I would like to say on behalf of all the
raeders and memembers of Birthrites a big THANK YOU to the
hard work Jackie and her helpers put in for all women. The
dedication and devotion that is shown is truely amazing. I
am not sure how she does it all and still functions as a
mother and partner.
