What is a safe waiting period between pregnancies after a c-section?

The risk of uterine rupture is estimated to occur in 0.05% births, and 0.1-0.8% among those attempting VBAC, that is it is an uncommon occurrence. (ACOG Practice Bulletin,1998)

A recent study has suggested that an interpregnancy interval of less than 6 months is associated with increased risk of scar rupture. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11084563&dopt=Abstract

• 43 cases of uterine scar failure (23 ruptures, 20 dehiscence) were found in a chart review over a ten year period at a large US hospital. Each patient was matched to control subjects delivered by Caesar during VBAC attempt during the same month.
• Average interpregnancy inyerval was shorter among those with rupture/dehiscence (26 months) than controls (36 months).
• An interpregnancy interval of less than 6 months was commoner among those with rupture/dehiscence (17.4%) than controls (4.7%).

The method of this study doesn't allow firm advice to be given, and this finding has not been previously reported.

I would suggest that the right time to try for another pregnancy is when a woman and her partner feel ready.
