Hi everyone. This is my first post and i just need to get some advice.

My first son was breech and born by c/s in dec 2003, and i am currently 32 weeks pregnant with our second little boy. At my 31 week appointment, i found out he is also breech. I just cried and cried, i couldn't believe it could happen again. I was 28 weeks when i found out my first son was breech and he didn't turn, so i don't have my hopes up with this one turning, but i am doing all the excercises i can and i am tring to stay positive. I am also going to see an acupuncturist who has a high sucess rate in turning breech babies. I am so desprate to experience labour and birth. There is still time for him to turn so i am keeping my fingers crossed.

What i want to know is, are there other women who have had more the one breech baby. The midwife said that some people will carry all there babies breech.

Thanks

Mell

Hi Mell,

I have never had a breech baby but there are positioning techniques you can use to help turn a breech baby. The most common one espoused is to get down on all fours then lower your elbows to the ground so your toushe is in the air.

Do this for at least 40 mins every day. You will probably find some more on the internet.

The other two things you should also consider later if all else fails are external cephalic version and if you are so inclined breech birth.

The studies I have read on ECV have shown that it is not contra-indicated where a prior csec has been done provided it is done by someone experienced in the procedure and it is done at a hospital (just in case). You may well find reluctance from many doctors - but these are usually people who also won't or can't do them on women who have never had a prior csec. There are studies on this on the internet.

The other potential option is a breech VBAC. Many OBs these days will only delivery breech by csec because there is a small risk of the baby being temporarily or permanently injured during delivery or getting stuck half way out (very rare). Personally I researched on this for my 1st VBAC and planned to have a vaginal delivery of my son even if he was breech. I was fortunate that the OB I had was very experienced in breech deliveries as he had taken part in the Breech Trial conducted about 7-8 years ago. The outcomes of this trial actually recommended csec for breech babies although the rate of all injuries was only about 8% (this is from memory I would have to check my stats to be sure) and most of those injuries were not permanent. I was willing to take this risk but many (including most OBs) are not.

I would strongly suggest you try the positioning but also research your other options and whatever you decide make sure you approach your OB with medical studies to back you up. Remember they cannot section you without your consent, but if you do decide to go for a breech delivery you need to find someone who has attended a number of breech deliveries and preferably in the not too distant past - this person may well be a midwife due to the attitude of OBs.

Good luck
Debby
