Hi Ekki

I had a VBAC for my second baby in November last year. I live in Nowra and had an independant midwife who lives in Goulburn and travels extensively. I planned a HBAC and laboured at home until it was evident that my daughter's head was stuck. We then went to the hospital and I delivered vaginally. I would be happy to chat to you. My midwife has great contacts and may be able to help.

Joh

Hi Ekki
I had a VBAC in December 03 at Royal Hospital for Woman in Randwick. If you want to go to a hospital then phone around, ask questions relevant to your situation and go to a hospital you are comfortable with even if you need to travel some distance. I live up near Hornsby and travelled 1.5 hours in peak traffic when in labour. But I found the hospital and staff supportive so didn't mind the car trip at all.
Good luck

Hi Joh,

Thats great to hear you had ur VBAC, can you tell me a lil more about ur first brith & this birth?

Also I am looking for a doula so if you or ur midwife know any, please let me know.
I have chosen and OB this time with a private hospital I know it is not recommended but I trust myself I can do it with a support person (doula)..I am scared of homebirth and cant afford a Ind midwife..

Would love to chat.

Thanks
Ekki

Hi Ekki
You can read my birth stories (and many others) in the "birth stories" section of this website (mine is called birthing matters). I thought I was strong enough the first time around and went private - for my VBAC I knew I would need an even more supportive environment so went public. If your sure you want to go private then a doula is a really good idea. There is an organisation in Waterloo called Doula Express 1300 139 507 or you could try the hubbub directory on the internet for some doula contacts. There are also area contacts on the birthrites website if you want to talk to someone over the phone.
Hope that helps.

Hi! My name is Katherine. I live in the Southern Highlands of NSW (about an hour south of Liverpool/Campbelltown). I had an emergency caesar in June 2003 and am attempting a VBAC in the next few weeks! I can only tell you what I have found - as to whether it works - we will see!!

I am booked in at Bowral hospital through an ob. He is supportive of VBAC and says I have about a 70% chance of being successful. However I think now I should have explored the midwifery model of care more before seeing him. He is very good but as an ob he has to consider his own risks too and is very medically minded - midwives seem to be more holistic.

The biggest advice I have had is to get good support - like you I can't afford an indep. m/w but many people have suggested even a likeminded female friend to be helpful - a doula even more so.

The best thing I think you can do is to be informed and prepare yourself. I have read some excellent books on birth - the ones by Sheila Kitzinger and Ina May Gaskin I would highly recommend. But the thing I have found the most helpful is Peter Jackson's cambirth course - you can find it on www.calmbirth.com.au. This brought me lots of healing from my caesar and has given me tools to use in this birth.

I hope that helps a bit - I am happy to help you with any advice on any of this (though I am not yet a successful VBACer!)

Take Care
Katherine

Hi Rhona,

Thanks again for replying so promplty...its good to know there are ladies out there I can talk to and that take their time out to write back.

Congrats on ur VBAC what an accomplishment! I read ur birth story.
I am really hoping for one as I think I am in the group that can be succesfull. My labour was slow progressing after 33 hrs I only dilated 8cm,
but i do think i went to hospital early maybe in pre labour as my contractions were not in time..

But this time round a will be prepared. I am curious to know who your doula was if u can tell me?
as its very reassuring knowing she was a midwofe for 22 yrs...I would like to look for someone like that as a doula.
Which area does she cover?

Thanks again and i'll keep asking questions if thats ok.

I am not in NSW but I thought I'd post re the question of public/private, homebirth/hospital etc.
My VBAC was at a private hospital in Melbourne, attended by covering OB as mine was off duty on the day. I had an independent midwife who was present until the last half hour or so, then just the hospital midwife.
There are many variables in all this, I guess I'm just saying that it is not impossible to have a VBAC in the private system.
My story "VBAC at 40" is posted on this website.
Good luck with your choices.

Hi Ekki!

You can find the full story of my caesar at http://www.birthrites.org/ under Birth Stories - called Royston's Birth.

To give you a summary though, I was induced due to pre-eclampsia and the baby went into distress (very quickly). As it was the baby (and not me) that 'caused' the caesar I always knew that a VBAC was a possibility with number 2. I know this makes things a bit different in my case, but I have heard many stories about women in different situations having successful VBACs so hang in there!

Take Care
Katherine

Hi Ekki
My doula was Denise Love, she established Birth Central in Waterloo, but has since sold the business. I am sure she is still involved but not sure if she is still doing doula work. However if you contact Birth Central they should be able to refer you to a doula who has assisted in VBAC births or has lots of experience. Perhaps sitting down and working through what concerns you have about your next birth and finding someone who you feel confident in will help. For example I didn't trust doctors to tell me the truth so I wanted someone who could read the signs. I wanted someone with strength who I knew could fight for what I wanted. I also wanted some counselling around my previous birth. Denise met these needs for me. But the support you feel you need and the support you already have may be different.
Hope that is helpful.
Rhona
