Just having one caesarean scar places one at risk of possible infertility or difficulty conceiving. Other risks include adhesions, abnormal placement of the placenta such as over the os of the cervix, invading the muscle of the uterus, or even penetrating the muscle and attaching to the peritoneum (outside the uterus) – these then increase the likelihood of haemorrhage and emergency hysterectomy. These are the risks – there are however, plenty of women who have gone on to have more babies after 4 caesarean sections, some even have had a vbac. As per usual, it is up to the individual woman to weigh up the risks for herself and make a decision about her choices and the risks she is willing to take, in conjunction with discussions with a maternity health professional. Read, read and read some more so that you can make an informed decision.
