Hi Jo Women are predisposed to haemorrhoids during pregnancy because of the hormone progesterone, produced by the placenta. It's a wonderful hormone and extremely important, despite some of the effects it has during pregnancy. How troublesome haemorrhoids become is a very individual thing, but the women may want to discuss positions during labour (eg not sitting on the toilet or birth stool for too long), the effects of forced pushing during second stage, pushing only when the urge to push is there, and not before, etc. Discussion of diet is also important, because of how it may influence the possibility of haemorrhoids developing, in conjunction with the phyiological changes which occur during pregnancy. Hope this helps - Rose
