Hello

I am new to the site and am already finding it very uplifting in my search to find out more VBAC information. I am 29 weeks along and am hoping for VBAC. I have a supportive Dr. which is great and have recently discovered hypnobirthing. Has anyone tried this with VBAC and been successful? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Lori,

Welcome to the site [Smile]

I am having a VBAC within the next few weeks (fingers crossed)and plan to use calmbirthing/hypnobirthing techniques. My assumption is that it certianly isnt going to hinder the process and really is going to have a fairly big benifit for my VBAC. Mainly becuase I will already be heading into a nerve wracking 'will this work' scenario and if I can remain calm during the process then that will make the labour and birth easier and I will be calm. Plus I'd say being calm and relaxed and not panicking or freaking out over pain and not putting several drugs in my system, will only benefit the baby and create less chance for ditress or fear with him/her.

I am going to kepe my eyes on this post and see who else replies cos I am interested in what others who have experienced it, have to say. And I will let you know how I go in the next few weeks.

Good luck with your pg and your VBAC!

Lisa

Hi Lisa!

Thanks for your reply and I completely agree with you. I know myself and I am one who tends to get a little uptight and so I'm trying to prevent that as much as possible! I've been doing prenatal yoga for the past month and the instructor does a 20 minute hypnobirth meditation at the end and I really respond well to this relaxation technique. I'm interested to know, where did you find your hypnobirthing resources? I've seen a few different possibilites and some books that sell with meditation cds but before I buy all this stuff I'd like to get some opinions!

Good luck with your VBAC. I think you are right about the medication. I also find it really helpful to think about the pain as a positive experience, like "this pain is productive...it is for a positive experience" etc. Of course, that said, I've never done it before so we'll see! My best wishes to you and a healthy baby!

Lori

Hi Lori,

I actually got all of my calmbirthing notes, techniques and cd's through a friend of mine who did the course in Sydney. I am in Melbourne and the course wasnt offered here so she offered to send me her notes.
The theory behind it,(calmbirthing)is basically controlled focused breathing and positive visualisation. Also believing that Fear = tension and tension = pain therefore if you try to not feel fear and try to relieve the tension then you will not feel the pain. I dont know how much of this is true and can be done but apparently women have done the course have gone through labour with minimal pain. It's all about shifting your focus. If you cannot find any guided hypnobirthing meditation cd's then try to find some general relaxation ones and use them yourself and create your own visualisation. Imagine your labour and your birth and imagine the process your body goes through and imagine yourself calmly and positively getting through it. Then see yourself pushing the baby out at the end and holding that baby and knowing you have had an empowered and successful birth. This will take time of course and you could do it a couple of times a week until you are ready to have your baby. Also the breathing technique is a fairly simple technique. Focused breathing. Breathe in for 4 or 5 counts. In through your nose and out through your mouth. And as you breath in your tummy rises and it falls as you breathe out. And as you breathe out breathe out for say 6 or 8 counts. So in for 4/5 and out 6/8. Focusing on your bretahing. Keeping yourslef calm.
While I beleive these classes and courses you can take are highly beneficial and will help you a great deal sometimes ppl can't do them due to several factors. Cost or location etc. I beleive if you focus and practice then you can prepare yourself quite well.
Doing your yoga will help you as well and thats going to help you open your body during labour.
What also helps during the actual labour is having your DH or birth partner or both (if there is more than one) telling you positive things. Things you have previously agreed on. Such as " Good work, soon we will meet our baby" or "You are doing so well and our baby is doing well. Soon he/she will be here".
You can create your own positive phrases and just get the birth partners to repeat them now and then through a contraction or during the labour. Its good to use your breathing and visualisation during the labour esp through the waves/contractions.
What else is good and almost essential for your labour is remembering not to close your body in when you feel the pain. Open your body up. To close our body in and try to squash ourselves in when we are in pain is a natural reaction but if we can focus and keep our bodies and mind open then we are better off. It helps us relax and helps the pelvis open up, which in turn helps the baby come through with so much more ease.
Rocking backwards and forwards while leaning on your partner or on all fours is one idea. Remember gravity works!!

I also strongly recommend researching VBAC for a while and working out the kind of birth you want. Getting your facts right about VBAC can be very important especially towards the end if ppl become a little negative and your head fills with doubt. Having that knowledge can mean having a lot of power espeically for yourself and your own self belief.

Anyway thats really quite enough from me for now lol. I had no intention of going on this much and I am sorry. I hope I have given you something to work with and if you have any more questions please dont hesitate to ask me.

Lisa
