I have a baby that is 7 months and was delivered cy c-section due to transverse arrest.

I am currently 9 weeks pregnant and wonder if the risks are higher for vbac due to the short healing time between the two births?

Hi Kato

The research seems to show that there is a slightly higher risk of uterine rupture when the interval, between the caesarean and next birth is less than 18 months. In one particular study by Bujold "Interdelivery interval and uterine rupture" American Journal of Obs and Gynae vol 187, page 1199 year 2002, they found that UR rates were 4.8% for interdelivery interval of less than 1year, 2.7% for interval of 13 - 24 months and 0.9% for greater than 24 months.

There's a very good review of UR in the British Medical Journal 2004; 329:19(3 July) by Guise et al, 'Systematic review of the incidence and consequences of uterine rupture in women with previous caesaren section'.

Another excellent site to assist in deciding on whether to have a vbac or an elective c/s is www.maternitywise.org/mw/topics/vbac-caesarean/tips_body.html.

All the best
