I would like to attempt a VBAC after having two previous c/secs. My first was an emergency caesarean in 9/2001 after 20 hours of labour and an attempted homebirth with Baby being OP. My second c/sec was in 2/2003 and was breech. I would have liked to try a VBAC for my second but was not given much choice given the short period of time between the births and Baby's breech position.

Ideally, I would like to attempt a vaginal birth but am also prepared to have a caesarean if necessary. Should this be the case can I request to wait until I go into labour to have the operation performed?

My next Baby is due early February 2005. Have I left enough time between this birth and the last to attempt a VBAC, and if so how much more am I at risk of uterine rupture? Are there any other risks that may be higher than normal given my birthing history?

Thank you for your time.

Hi Helen

Sincere apologies for the delay in responding to your query!! Your baby is due very soon...

Yes, you can request to wait until you go into labour to have a caesarean performed. This can ensure the baby is ready to be born and so minimise breathing problems due to prematurity.

There is 24 months between this expected birth and your last caesarean. Studies have shown that 18 months between the caesarean and the next birth shows the lowest risk of uterine rupture.

Other risks for you are that you have had 2 caesareans - there is a slightly increased risk of uterine rupture. There is a great overview of research about vbac after 2 caesareans at www.plus-size-pregnancy.org/CSANDVBAC/vbac_after_2_cs.htm.

Women have had great success at vba2c. A lot of the success has to do with emotional preparation. So believe in yourself and your body's ability to give birth to your baby.

Have a beautiful birth Helen!!
