Today I am 11 days overdue with my second child, I had an emergency c/s 8 yrs ago with my first and he was 19 days overdue and weighed nearly 5 kg / 11 pound, I have been given till tomorrow by the hospital to go into labour, my cervix is still closed so they want me to stay overnight and have a procedure done to open my cervix, the procedure involves having my legs in stirrups and a catherta inserted with two balloons inserted on either side of my cervix that inflate to open the cervix. This is the only option they will offer me, so I decided to call a local independant midwife to see if she would monitor me every few days and give me a bit more time to go into labour naturally she has agreed and has even offered to support me in a home birth, she has given me hope but I am still very anxious about being so overdue how can I get this labour happening? Im on herbs having acupuncture taking homeopathics eating hot curries having sex going on walks even had an enema and NOTHING and the baby continues to get bigger Im trying not to panic has any one got a miracle cure or just some good advice. Hi Redlyn! How frustrating for you. It sounds like you have pretty comprehensively tried everything I've heard recommended!! The only ones not on your list that I have come across are nipple stimulation (though of course the sex should involve that!), visualisations (visualise the cervix opening like a flower) and the old wives tale of castor oil. Have they tried sweeping the membranes as it has to be less invasive than what the hospital is suggesting? I really hope something happens for you soon - keep positive and let us know what happens!
take care

Hi Redlyn,

I bought on my labour with my 2nd son using nipple stimulation.

There are other methods and you can find them at these sites:

http://www.babycentre.co.uk/pregnancy/labourandbirth/labour/bringonlabournaturallyexpert/?_requestid=1911187

http://www.naturalchildbirth.org/natural/resources/interventions/interventions15.htm

http://www.aafp.org/afp/20030515/2123.html

Its probably a bit late now but I would actually recommend not staying in hospital overnight. They cannot force you to stay and by the tone of your email the whole prospect is making you tense and staying in hospital would probably just make you more tense which is not conducive to bringing on labour.

The hospital cannot force you to have an induction of any sort nor can they force you to have a csec if an induction does not work however there are some factors you need to consider:

a. There are risks associated with going "too" overdue with a baby. What the "cut off" time is is argued in different studies but the generally accepted time for increasing risk is around 10days plus. That said many women have gone on to have perfectly healthy babies more than 10+ days late. Just read the stats and make sure you are informed.

b. With the catheter induction method there is a risk that the amniotic sack will be ruptured accidentally or intentionally. Once the membranes are ruptured there is a risk of infection in the membranes. This is usually considered unlikely in the first 24hrs and antibiotics can be taken as a precaution but it does mean "the clock is ticking".

It is a difficult choice to make but the more unready your body is the less likely labour can be force in the next 24hrs. The things like sex and nipple stimulation can help to ripen the cervix and then bring on labour. Given this is your 2nd child this may happen quite quickly and possibly even within a few hours.

Good luck

Debby
