Hi,
I long to have a third child but feel I need to reassure myself first with some research. Hope you can help
When my son was born there was meconium in the waters and after a reasonably uneventful birth (approx 6 hours) he then spent 3 days in SCN due to pneumonia from aspirating the meconium.
Three years later when my I was pregnant with my daughter, my waters broke at home and to my distress...lots of meconium. Too much for the birth centre apparently so we transferred to hospital and had a short but distress (on her part) filled birth with me being prepped for a c-section. I dilated very quickly and she was born vaginally not long after. She was taken to SCN but was fine, although my midwife was amazed to discover the placenta had a velementous cord insertion and the waters had broken leaving a diamond shape that she came through, surrounded by vessels.
I have reserached vasa previa and all related to it as much as I can, and I realise this is unlikely to happen again, although it scares me as I know it has a very high mortality rate.
My questions is actually more about the meconium. Approx. what percentage of babies are born with meconium in the waters? Is it a big enough risk to turn a homebirth into a hospital one?
Sorry, that turned into an epic!
Thanks.
